Your Contribution Matters

Moss & Thistle Farm is passionate about community-based deathcare and works closely with the Sophia Center for Life Studies (SCLS) to create and support opportunities for a wholistic and deeply personal approach to death and dying.

Accommodations for a Shared Experience

Moss and Thistle Farms offers a unique experience for those who wish to play an active role in their farewell journey. Your contributions will also be used to provide housing accommodations for individuals who choose to stay at the farm. Here, they can weave their own casket under the expert guidance of Sarah and be part of the entire process. This immersive experience allows for a deeper connection with the eco-conscious farewell tradition and with the natural world.

 Our work with SCLS includes:

  • A volunteer-tended sanctuary within our willow groves to provide nature immersion and a place of healing for those navigating grief;

  • Participation in workshops to educate and inspire direct involvement in caring for our own after death;

  • Education on casket and shroud construction;

  • A Willow Casket Weavers Guild to nurture and support this beautiful craft;

  • Community casket-making circles and events;

  • Free or reduced-cost infant caskets;

  • And a community-assistance fund to help lower-income clients cover the costs of participating in the creation of their burial vessel or shroud.

SCLS is a 501 C-3 non-profit organization that has been supporting community-based deathcare since 1996. Your tax-deductible donation can be directed to a specific SCLS initiative (like those listed above) or left open to be applied to the program most in need of support at the time. All donations to SCLS are property of SCLS for use in their community-based deathcare work, and separate from the casket sales of Moss & Thistle Farm. Purchases of Moss & Thistle Farm caskets and shrouds are not connected to the SCLS and are not tax-deductible. If you would like to help support lower-income clients in their purchase of a casket, non-tax deductible contributions to our “Pay-it-Forward Fund” are welcome and gratefully received by us and those otherwise unable to purchase a casket at full-price. Pay-it-Forward Fund

Moss & Thistle Farm is a small family run business and farm, and while we strive to keep the cost of our caskets and shrouds as reasonable as possible, the high cost of materials and personalized nature of our business means our products are still financially out of reach for many. If you are able to help offset the cost of a natural burial vessel for someone else, though not tax-deductible, your generous donation will be gratefully received and used in-full to directly reduce the purchase price for a person or community. If you have wishes or intention for how your gift is applied, we would love to include you in the decision-making—this is a community movement, in support of the earth we share, and we are so happy you are part of it.
